Editor's Notes: Charlie Lutes told us he was often asked for advice on all types of personal and professional matters, both at his lectures or sometimes on the phone. The questioner would explain the situation and then Charlie would often be asked, “Charlie, what is the right thing to do here?” and Charlie would then do his best to answer. “Well”, Charlie told us, “… most people already know what the right thing is that they need to do, some people just will not do the right thing until they have exhausted all other options first”. Perhaps partly in response, Charlie compiled his list of “Ten Pretty Good Rules” and he often quoted these during his lectures.

Ten Pretty Good Rules
by Charlie Lutes

1) Never wrestle with a pig; you both get dirty and the pig likes it.

2) Observe everything; admire nothing.

3) Never argue with an idiot; people watching may not be able to tell the difference.

4) It's easier to obtain forgiveness than it is permission.

5) Never resist the opportunity to keep your mouth shut.

6) Don't ask the question if you can't live with the answer.

7) Things are never so small that they can't be blown out of proportion.

8) Never try to teach a pig to sing; it wastes your time and it annoys the pig.

9) If you don't know what you're doing, you won't know when to quit.

10) Never look back unless you intend to go that way.
